New SUSD Grading Practices

On April 16th, the Governing Board approved changes to Scottsdale Unified School District’s grading practices that will be implemented in 2013-14 school year. The recommendations were developed by a committee made up of teachers, parents, administrators and high school students. The committee studied the discrepancies between report card grades and performance on standardized assessments and the inconsistencies in grading practices across the District. In order to develop the recommendations, they studied best practices from experts across the country. The recommendations were designed to improve consistency while increasing academic rigor by focusing on student’s abilities to demonstrate what they have learned. The majority of a student’s grade will be determined based on how well they perform on assessments which include projects, essays, portfolios, tests, etc. This proficiency based system will help us better prepare our students with the knowledge and skills they need to be prepared for higher education and the workforce.

Assistant Superintendent Dr. Andi Fourlis will host an informational meeting for parents and students to learn more about the changes in the grading practices they can expect to see next year.

Meeting date and time:

Monday, May 20
6:00 pm
Mohave District Annex
8500 E. Jackrabbit Road
Scottsdale 85250

5 SUSD Students Nominated for U.S. Presidential Scholarship

Scottsdale Unified School District is proud to announce that five SUSD students are U.S. Presidential Scholarship nominees. They are Mara Green, Chaparral; Benjamin Krakoff, Chaparral; Scott Heim, Desert Mountain; Austen Yueh, Desert Mountain; and Mitra Maz, Desert Mountain (graduated 2012). The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by executive order of President Lyndon Johnson, to recognize and honor some of our nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors. In 1979, the program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative and performing arts. Each year, only 141 students are named Presidential Scholars, one of the nation's highest honors for high school students. Semifinalists will be announced in early April, and scholars will be announced in early May.

Graduation Requirements:
Changes to Graduation Requirements. Click to see the memo to superintendents and principals by State Superintendent John Huppenthal which highlights the revisions to Arizona’s graduation requirements that are to be enforced beginning with this year’s 2012  graduating  class.  It is important to ensure all 2012 graduates meet the new criteria.  The State Board of Education adopted new high school graduation requirements in December 2007 with a phased in timeline that applies to those students graduating in 2012 and 2013. Please note:
All  graduation  requirements  shall  be  strictly  enforced  by  year  of  graduation,  NOT  by  a
cohort.  Therefore, high school seniors who fail to meet graduation requirements by the end of 2012 will
be  required  to  complete  all  additional  requirements  that  become  effective  in  2013,  as  outlined  in  State
Board of Education Rule (AAC R7-2-302.01, 302.02, and 302.03).
